Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you would’ve noticed the creeping impact of technology on our daily lives, particularly in the last 10 years. It has changed the way we shop, the way we communicate, how we connect, do business, consume news and entertainment, make music and countless other aspects of our lives.

This readily evolving transformation of our society means that businesses must adapt to the ever-changing environment. Many a business has gone under because of an inability to keep up-to-date. The internet has opened up the world with its incredible information sharing capacity.

Customer is boss

It is no longer acceptable that a quality business functions without supplementing its business with internet/online exposure. The consumer has become the employer, while the rest of us have become employees. They tell business owners what they want and we all reply, ‘Yes sir’. At least in most cases.

Ultimately, that is why businesses exist in the first place, to provide a product or service for the community they are serving. Therefore, it is more of a positive than a negative that customers are beginning to dictate market trends. Nonetheless, businesses should understand which consumers they want dictating to them, this special group of people is what we call a niche. To do that optimally, the digital tools we possess become crucial. How we use them to reach our target market could be the make-or-break of our business.

The world is your oyster

Some of the best users of these tools come from average or even poor backgrounds, but you hear them often in your ‘rags to riches’ stories. Many of these people are the self-made billionaires that sit at the top of some of the biggest companies in the world.  What was once only feasible through life-long journeys travelling from country to country can now be done within the comfort of your own home.

For those that are working corporate/office jobs in order to make ends meet, the opportunity is there to make a living as well as build something of your own. An idea that could potentially disrupt a multi-billion dollar industry. This is one of the reasons why the advent of being an entrepreneur has become so lucrative in the eyes of many. The ability to personally make your own ideas a reality is more real than ever. You no longer must settle for the job you hate going to every morning.

Work with purpose

On this note, it is important to remember that the essence of any success on this path is to have a purpose. Often, we see the allures of luxury appearing online showing what some envision as the lifestyle of a self-made business individual. This could not be further from the truth. The lifestyle involved in building your idea from the ground-up, is hard work, dedication and whole lot of sacrifice.

Having a purpose makes it easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel. With that in mind, one day when you do become successful, don’t do it to look the part and get carried away displaying your riches to the world. Many before you have been rich and famous, but it did not grant them happiness. Your sense of purpose and your willingness to give back to the community and society that helped raise you, is where you derive your ultimate satisfaction.
