The Business Wilderness welcomed special guest and digital marketing guru, Neil Patel. Neil is the co-founder of Crazy Egg and Hello Bar. He helps companies like Amazon, NBC, GM, HP and Viacom grow their revenue. The Wall Street Journal calls him a top influencer on the web, Forbes says he is one of the top 10 online marketers and Entrepreneur Magazine says he created one of the 100 most brilliant companies in the world.

He was recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by President Obama and one of the top 100 entrepreneurs under the age of 35 by the United Nations. Neil has also been awarded Congressional Recognition from the United States House of Representatives.


At 16 years old, he was unable to get a job and wanted to make money. He made a website and started marketing it and in the process started helping others market their websites. He’s never looked back since. For 16 years, he’s been learning through the experience of his own failures and making sure he doesn’t repeat them.

He graduated from college with a degree in marketing, but didn’t really hold down a corporate job. He admits that college did not much help him as an individual, but advises other college students to make the most of their time at university.

Choosing a Digital Consultant

Neil advises that the best way to get past a consultant’s marketing tactics is to look for results and past work. Do some research on what they have achieved as proof is in the pudding. For those building their own startups, he advises that you put in some time yourself to build the processes of your business.

Needs to be a personal role initially so that you are aware of the problems people that you employ in future will encounter and you can accommodate accordingly. The goal should then be to hire people much smarter than yourself to occupy those roles.

Startup Marketing

When asked about the best ways for startups to market their business, he mentions the importance of creating press. If you’re especially low on capital, you have to on the scavenge for the latest growth-hacking techniques that will work for your company.

In and amongst the millions of pieces of content online, Neil advises that you need to market your content properly. Use tools such as BuzzSumo to find the top posts in your industry and write a much better article. Once you do that, target the consumers reading the top-listed article.

Future of Entrepreneurship

The landscape has become more competitive than ever. the most important thing entrepreneurs can do is cut through the noise and find simple solutions for customers. In order to accomplish this, you have to provide a convenient solution at an affordable price.
